There are a few keys to internet marketing, and tracking is one of them. The importance of tracking cannot be emphasized too much. I forgot who said it, but some business guru said you can't manage what you don't measure. Internet marketing is one business where that's oh so true!
Actually, internet marketing is very much a numbers game. In a way it's like baseball-you can measure every single aspect of your business (and you should!).
The whole goal is to make a profit selling stuff. That's the first thing you need to keep up with-profit. If you have $100 in affiliate commissions and spent $50 making that $100, then you have $50 profit. That's good! If you have $1,000 in affiliate commission and spent $1100 making it, then you're $100 in the hole. That's bad!
I suspect a lot of internet marketers think they're working when they're sitting in front of the computer reading their blog feeds from all of the internet blogs they've signed up to. That's not work! At best you could categorize that as research. Really it's a big waste of time.

Legendary copywriter, John Carlton, has this great phrase he uses to describe this idea of productive work-it's called "Operation Money Suck!" According to John, you need to be working on Operation Money Suck at all times. The rest of the non-sense can be outsourced to either employees or independent contractors.
